01
What is HĀM Studio?
HĀM Studio designs bespoke pet architecture: made-to-measure furniture and built-in systems that integrate companion rest, feeding, storage, ventilation, cleaning access, and daily routines into the architecture of the home. Unlike standard pet furniture, each commission begins with the room, the companion animal, and the way the household actually lives.
02
What is pet architecture?
Pet architecture is the design discipline of integrating a companion animal’s rest, feeding, storage, hygiene, and daily routines into the architecture of a room, rather than adding a standalone pet object after the space is finished. At HĀM, it means treating the dog or cat as a true inhabitant of the home: the piece is sized to the room, the animal’s body and behavior, the household’s circulation, and the existing interior, so companion life and good design occupy the same space. Read the end of pet furniture for the full thinking.
03
What do I need before contacting HĀM Studio?
You do not need a complete plan to begin. One sentence describing what is not working is enough for a free initial review; a clear room photo is helpful but optional. If the direction is useful and you want to develop a project, Prepare Your Space explains the measurements, room views and companion details that help the studio progress it.
04
Can I start with only one photo of my room?
Yes. A single room photo is often the best starting point. It shows circulation, wall proportions, furniture relationships, light, floor level, and the visual language of the home. From there, HĀM Studio can advise whether the next step should be a Space Brief, Spatial Audit, or Full Commission.
05
Do I need architectural drawings before submitting an inquiry?
No. Architectural drawings are helpful but not required for the first inquiry. If you already have floor plans, elevations, millwork drawings, or interior design documentation, you may share them. If you do not have drawings, HĀM can begin with photographs, approximate dimensions, and a short description of the problem.
06
What measurements do I need to provide?
To begin, approximate measurements are enough: the width, depth, and height of the area you want the piece to occupy. As a project develops, useful additions include ceiling height, skirting board height, the position of doors, windows, power outlets, heating vents, and any access route the piece must travel through. You do not need precise drawings to start — HĀM can confirm exact dimensions during the design pathway. See how to prepare your space.
07
How does the remote design process work?
HĀM considers commissions internationally. You begin with a short description of the room problem; one room photo is helpful but optional. If the project develops, HĀM uses written consultation, approximate measurements, concept direction, material selection and digital review. Before work proceeds, we confirm the suitable pathway in writing: HĀM-managed fabrication and freight, local fabrication from HĀM documentation, or design-only support.
08
Can HĀM work with my interior designer, architect, or local builder?
Yes. HĀM can work with homeowners directly or collaborate with an interior designer, architect, contractor, cabinetmaker, or local builder. For remote projects, the Spatial Audit pathway can provide builder-ready direction, including dimensions, material logic, functional requirements, and the design intent needed for local fabrication or coordination.
Pricing and Project Scope
09
What is the typical budget range?
HĀM offers design pathways from $350 USD, which keeps the first step accessible. For fabricated work, archive pieces commonly begin from several thousand USD, while larger wall systems and full-height built-in compositions start higher. The final figure depends on scale, materials, complexity, fabrication method, freight to your region, and installation requirements — so bespoke projects are priced accurately only after the room and the companion are understood. Discuss your budget.
10
What is the difference between The Space Brief, The Spatial Audit, and The Full Commission?
The Space Brief is the lightest starting point — it helps define the spatial problem, visual direction, and possible solution. The Spatial Audit adds more technical detail, including dimensions, layout logic, material direction, and builder-ready guidance. The Full Commission covers the complete journey from concept development to fabrication coordination and delivery, where available. Discuss which pathway fits.
11
Is the service fee separate from fabrication and furniture cost?
Yes. The design pathway fee covers the strategic and design work required to define the solution. Fabrication, freight, installation, and final furniture cost depend on the confirmed scope. This separation keeps the first step accessible while allowing each project to be priced accurately after the space, companion needs, materials, and delivery conditions are understood.
12
When is the final price confirmed?
The final project price is confirmed after the scope, dimensions, materials, fabrication requirements, delivery region, and installation needs are reviewed. For bespoke work, accurate pricing depends on the actual room and the actual companion, not only on a product category or standard size.
13
What payment methods do you accept?
HĀM currently accepts bank transfer and PayPal. As every HĀM project is individually designed and priced, we do not use a standard fixed-price online checkout. Once the project scope and quotation are confirmed, clients may receive a project-specific PayPal invoice for the agreed amount. Each proposal and invoice states the agreed currency, commissioning deposit and payment schedule. For fabrication managed by HĀM, the remaining balance must be paid in full and cleared before dispatch. Freight, duties, taxes and installation are itemised or confirmed in the commission agreement where applicable. Additional payment methods may be introduced over time.
Not sure which pathway fits?
Send the room, the companion, and the problem. HĀM will suggest the most suitable first step.

14
How is HĀM different from regular pet furniture brands?
HĀM approaches pet furniture as architecture rather than as a loose consumer product. Regular pet furniture is usually mass-produced in fixed sizes and added after a room is finished. HĀM designs from the room outward: proportion, circulation, storage, material rhythm, animal behavior, cleaning access, and long-term domestic use are considered together. The result is not a pet object placed inside the home — it is a piece of the home designed around shared life. We explore this in why most pet furniture fails beautiful homes.
15
What is built-in pet furniture?
Built-in pet furniture is made-to-measure furniture or joinery that integrates companion functions into the room itself. It may include a resting niche, feeding platform, storage wall, litter enclosure, entry-care area, workstation, or library wall. The purpose is not only to hide pet objects, but to make rest, feeding, care, and storage belong to the room’s architecture.
16
Is HĀM a dog crate alternative?
HĀM is not simply a dog crate alternative. A crate can be useful for training, travel, recovery, or temporary structure. HĀM focuses on long-term residential space: calm retreat, shared presence, storage, ventilation, access, and the way a dog lives inside the room over time. Read more on why a crate is not a room.
17
Do you work with dog owners, cat owners, or both?
Both. HĀM primarily designs for dog owners and cat owners, with other companion animals considered case by case. Cat-focused projects may consider vertical territory, visibility, hiding, litter placement, ventilation, scratching behavior, resource separation, and cleaning access. Dog-focused projects may consider resting posture, threshold height, secure retreat, household proximity, age, mobility, feeding, and daily route patterns. Households with both dogs and cats are common, and the design accounts for how the animals share and divide the space.
18
Can the design match my existing interior?
Yes. Matching your existing interior is central to how HĀM works. The design begins from your room: its proportions, materials, joinery, color palette, light, and the visual language already present. Timber species, finishes, edge details, and hardware are selected to sit naturally alongside your current furniture and architecture, so the piece reads as part of the home rather than a separate pet product. Material samples may be provided in selected pathways to confirm tone and finish against your space.
19
What happens if my pet does not use the space?
No designed environment can guarantee animal behaviour, but HĀM reduces the risk by designing around observed routines, body size, access, placement, visibility, retreat, material comfort and household movement. Introduce a new space gradually: keep familiar scent nearby, allow voluntary exploration, reward calm contact, introduce one function at a time, and keep a comfortable exit or retreat route. Pause if your companion shows persistent distress. Download the companion settling guide.
Materials, Safety, and Maintenance
20
What materials do you use?
HĀM uses architectural-grade engineered panel with a durable furniture-grade finish, low- or zero-VOC coatings, durable upholstery, removable pads, and premium hardware suited to residential furniture. Material choices vary by project, but the aim remains consistent: structural stability, cleanability, visual longevity, and safe contact with companion animals. We explain our timber thinking in beyond solid wood.
21
Are HĀM materials pet-safe?
HĀM specifies materials with pet safety, indoor air quality, cleaning, and daily contact in mind. Finishes, fabrics, timber surfaces, ventilation, edge details, and removable soft elements are considered as part of the design. If a companion has known sensitivities, allergies, chewing behavior, mobility limitations, or medical considerations, those details should be shared during the brief.
22
How do you handle ventilation, odour, and cleaning access?
Ventilation and cleaning access are part of the design brief, especially for enclosed rest areas, litter-related functions, feeding zones, and storage for companion supplies. Depending on the project, HĀM may use open clearances, slatted panels, removable pads, washable textiles, accessible trays, service gaps, or compartment layouts that make maintenance easier.
23
Are cushions, pads, and bowls removable?
Where the function requires regular cleaning, HĀM designs removable elements such as upholstered rest pads, feeding trays, bowls, or washable textile components. The exact removable parts depend on the companion, the room, and the furniture type.
24
What finishes and colour directions are available?
Common directions include walnut, pale oak, warm timber tones, dark-stained tones and lacquered finishes, with the exact finish confirmed per project depending on requirements and availability. Material samples may be provided during selected design pathways before fabrication is confirmed.
Delivery, Installation, and Global Work
25
Do you accept international commissions?
Yes. HĀM Studio accepts international commissions. Projects can be managed remotely through written documentation, digital consultation, room photographs, measurements, drawings where available, and structured design review. Delivery, fabrication, and installation options depend on the region, project size, and final scope.
26
How does international remote commissioning work for my region?
HĀM considers commissions internationally. Each project uses room photographs, measurements, digital consultation and structured design review. Before a commission proceeds, HĀM confirms the responsible pathway in writing: HĀM-managed fabrication and freight, local fabrication from HĀM documentation, or design-only support. Feasibility depends on fabrication capability, freight, customs, building access and installation—not on a hierarchy of regions.
27
Can HĀM arrange international delivery or local fabrication?
Potentially. HĀM considers enquiries from Australia and other international locations. Availability depends on a responsible fabrication, freight, customs, access and installation pathway—not on a hierarchy of regions. HĀM confirms the suitable route and responsibilities in writing before final pricing or production.
28
Is assembly required when the piece arrives?
It depends on the piece and the destination. Many freestanding furniture pieces arrive substantially complete or require only minimal final assembly. Larger built-in systems and wall compositions are designed for on-site installation. Any placement, assembly or installation service is included only where it is expressly stated in the project quote. If a project is fabricated locally from HĀM documentation, assembly and installation are handled by your chosen cabinetmaker or builder.
29
How are delivery and installation confirmed?
HĀM reviews the destination, piece size, building access, freight partner capability and installation requirements before final pricing. The agreed packing, freight, placement, assembly and installation responsibilities are then recorded in writing, so you know what is included before the commission proceeds.
30
Can the piece be built by a local cabinetmaker or millworker?
Some projects may be suitable for local fabrication with a qualified cabinetmaker, millworker, contractor, or interior build team. In those cases, HĀM can provide design direction, dimensions, material logic, functional requirements, and drawings through the appropriate service pathway.
31
How long does a full commission take?
The programme is confirmed in writing after HĀM reviews the approved design, materials, production complexity, destination, access and installation requirements. This avoids presenting one universal timeline for projects whose fabrication and delivery conditions can differ substantially.
Fit, Samples, and Next Steps
32
Is HĀM suitable for apartments?
Yes, HĀM can be suitable for apartments when the piece is designed around available wall length, storage needs, circulation, access, building rules, delivery constraints, and the companion’s routines. Apartment projects often benefit from integrated storage, compact resting zones, feeding organization, and reduced visual clutter.
33
Can this be installed in a rental home?
Often, yes. Fixed built-in work can require landlord approval, so for rentals HĀM typically recommends furniture-based systems, freestanding wall compositions, or lower-intervention pieces that need no permanent fixing and can move with you when you relocate. Tell us during the brief that the home is rented, and the design is shaped around what your tenancy allows.
34
Is bespoke pet architecture worth the investment?
Bespoke pet architecture is most valuable for design-conscious homes where standard pet furniture creates visual clutter, poor circulation, storage problems, cleaning friction, or a mismatch between the animal’s needs and the room. It is a long-term investment in both the companion’s daily comfort and the spatial quality of the home.
35
Who is HĀM not right for?
HĀM is not the right fit for households looking for a quick off-the-shelf pet bed, a low-cost temporary item, or a standard product shipped immediately from inventory. HĀM is designed for clients who want a considered, made-to-measure solution that belongs to the room and can support daily life over time.
36
Can I see samples before committing to fabrication?
Material samples may be included in selected pathways before production sign-off. Samples can help confirm timber tone, finish direction, textile feel, and compatibility with the existing interior palette.
37
How do I prepare my space before submitting an inquiry?
For a free initial review, start with a short sentence describing the current problem; one room photo is helpful but optional. Prepare Your Space is the detailed second stage for approximate width, depth and height, useful room views, fixed architectural details, access routes, building restrictions and the companion’s size and routines. See how to prepare your space.
38
What is the best first step?
The best first step is to describe what is not working in the room. A photo is helpful but optional. HĀM Studio will review whether the project is best suited to a Space Brief, Spatial Audit, Full Commission, archive-inspired piece, or a different direction.
39
Is HĀM Studio the same as HAM Studio?
Yes. HĀM Studio is the studio’s primary name. HAM Studio is the plain-text spelling used by search engines, URLs, and systems that do not preserve the macron above the A.
10-Year Warranty and Aftercare
40
What warranty comes with a fabricated HĀM commission?
A physical commission whose fabrication HĀM commissions, manages or expressly approves in writing includes a 10-year warranty from delivery against manufacturing and structural defects under normal domestic use. If you independently appoint a local fabricator, that fabricator is responsible for its materials, workmanship and installation; HĀM remains responsible for the design and documentation it supplies. A free review or design-only service is not a product warranty. Read the warranty overview.
41
What does the 10-year warranty cover?
For HĀM-managed or expressly approved fabrication, the warranty covers manufacturing workmanship and the structural integrity of the fabricated piece, together with project-specified joinery, hinges, runners and factory-applied finishes where a failure is caused by a manufacturing defect under normal domestic use. The approved specification and written warranty supplied with the piece define the exact covered components.
42
What is not covered?
The warranty does not cover normal wear, expected variation or ageing in natural materials, accidents, misuse, improper cleaning, unsuitable humidity or outdoor exposure, pet chewing, scratching or soiling, unauthorised repair or alteration, or carrier damage. These exclusions do not limit any rights that cannot lawfully be excluded under applicable consumer law.
43
How do I make a warranty claim?
Email studio@byhaam.com with your name, order details, a description of the issue and clear photographs. HĀM aims to acknowledge a complete claim within three business days, may request further information or inspection, and will then explain the assessment and proposed next step.
44
Can the 10-year warranty transfer to a new owner?
The written warranty is provided to the original commissioning client for the fabricated piece identified in the project record. It does not automatically transfer on resale or transfer of the piece, except where applicable law requires otherwise.
45
What remedy will HĀM provide?
If a claim is accepted, HĀM will determine an appropriate remedy based on the issue, the affected component and the project location. This may include repair, replacement of an affected component, replacement of the piece, or another remedy required by applicable consumer law. Any statutory remedies operate in addition to the written warranty.
