The Blackened Oak Entry Bench

Description

A low bench for the entry side of a living room — the place where you sit to change shoes and where the companion waits for the door. It gives that routine a single piece of furniture: a seat for the household, drawers for the things that usually pile up by the door, and an enclosed bay for the one item nobody wants on display. The seat sits at bench height with a long removable cushion, deep enough to sit on properly and low enough for a shorter-legged or older animal to use as a step or a resting place beside you. Beneath it, two deep drawers hold leads, towels, and outdoor items behind flush fronts. A tall end panel rises at the left to screen the bench from the living room and the sofa beyond, so the entry routine is visually separated without closing the space with a wall or a door. The right-hand bay is the service position: a sealed, wipe-clean tray pulls fully out on runners, sized for a litter box, a wash-down mat, or a wet-weather tray for muddy paws. Pulling it out means the whole tray can be lifted to the bin or the tap rather than cleaned in place, and pushed back it disappears behind the joinery line. A shallow drawer above it keeps litter scoops, wipes, and grooming items at hand height, directly over the point where they are used. The bay is open-fronted so the animal can enter without a door to push, and enclosed on three sides for privacy. The counter runs level across both volumes as a surface for a lamp, a bowl, and keys — the short pause between inside and outside. Bench height, cushion depth, tray size, bay opening, and internal clearance are all set from your companion's measurements and the way the entry is used; run length, panel height, and drawer layout follow the room.
