The Arched Alcove Sanctuary

Description

A built-in arched niche for a living room or garden room, resolved as one continuous landscape: a stepped platform the household and the companion share, and an architectural chamber at its centre where the animal sleeps. The arch is lined and framed in timber, with two floating shelves above for objects and pictures. Beneath them, a stone shelf runs as a display and serving surface. The left bay under it is the resting chamber — lined in timber on all faces, with a removable linen mattress on a sealed, wipe-clean base and a radiused scallop cut into the front edge so entry is a step rather than a climb. It closes with a panel door on a reeded stile, so the chamber can be left open day to day and shut when the room is set for guests. Because it sits inside the arch and above the platform, the chamber is enclosed on three sides and shaded while keeping a full view of the room. A second, lower feeding drawer pulls out from the plinth: two stainless bowls recessed flush into a sealed timber tray, held level and wipeable, and pushed fully away when the room is in use. Recessing the bowls stops dishes travelling across the floor, and setting them in a drawer means the feeding position has no permanent floor presence at all. To the right, panel doors on slim brass pulls enclose deep storage with adjustable shelves, with two shallow drawers below the platform line for bedding, towels, and care items. The stepped platform wraps the whole composition in two levels, each carrying a long cushion: the lower step for the companion to climb from the floor, the upper as seating beside the window and as the approach to the chamber. For older or shorter-legged animals, the step reduces the height of every movement they make into the piece. Chamber width, internal height, door opening, mattress depth, step rise, bowl diameter, and tray height are all set from your companion's measurements, age, and mobility; arch radius, platform length, shelf heights, and storage layout follow the room. The mahogany-toned timber, cream stone, and linen shown are one direction rather than a fixed specification.
